Make a difference
There are many different ways that you can tackle food waste. The best thing is to find something that works for you.
In addition to making changes in your home, you can be part of the larger food waste movement. The more people who know about food waste, the bigger impact we can have.

Community and Sharing
Join the mission and be part of the hands and feet that provide over 29 million meals to the community by volunteering at local food rescue organisations or food banks to redistribute surplus food.
Love the outdoors? Participate in initiatives like Pick Fruit to harvest excess fruit and redistribute to foodbanks.
Share your surplus food with whānau, neighbours, or at your local pātaka kai (community pantry). Better yet, consider setting up a pātaka kai in your area and start a ripple of kindness!
If you love cooking or have a flair for hospitality, volunteer at Everybody Eats. Help transform rescued food into mouthwatering meals that bring joy and nourishment to your community.
Fishers! Join the movement with the Free Fish Heads app from Kai Ika to share nutritious fish parts to those who value them as tasty kai! Since 2016, over 385,000 kg of fish parts have been rescued and shared with families and community groups across Auckland.

Shop and Eat with Purpose
Did you know “imperfect” produce is just as delicious? Buy misshapen or “imperfect” produce at supermarkets or from initiatives like Misfit Garden, Wonky Box, or Perfectly Imperfect.
Rescue surplus food from cafes and restaurants using the FoodPrint app, which lets you purchase discounted items that would otherwise be thrown out.
Back innovative solutions and support innovative upcycled food products that give new life to food that might have been wasted, such as Citizen and Rescued Kitchen.
Support your local cafes and restaurants who are tackling food waste head-on! These businesses are finding creative ways to minimise waste. Want to know who’s leading the charge in your area? Check out Kai Keepers.
